Volunteering for Perennial at RHS Hampton Court Place Flower show – Mirella’s thoughts

This year TRC pledged all of us would volunteer one day of our time to a charity or project of our choice. Something that was close to our hearts so we could give something back but also have an enjoyable, rewarding experience.

Franky and I volunteered to spend a day with the Perennial Charity, which are the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping people who work in horticulture when times get tough. They provide free and confidential advice, support and financial assistance to people of all ages working in, or retired from horticulture.

The Hampton Court Palace Flower Show is the largest flower show in the world. The Show is held in early July, and run by the Royal Horticultural Society at Hampton Court Palace in southwest London.

Perennial ran 2 plant and product crèches at the show, where people could safely leave their shopping, whilst they continued to enjoy the show. This is where Franky and I provided our services, safely storing products, issuing tickets, keeping the marquee organized and tidy and talking to the visitors and encouraging donations which were then passed on to the Perennial Charity.

The show was huge and the setting was just amazing. People were enjoying themselves whilst looking for new inspiration for their gardens. There was plenty to choose from, from show gardens, the rose marquee, floral marquee, plant pavilions and a variety of talks, demonstrations and exhibits including garden furniture and garden metal work etc.

We both had a great time and we will definitely do it again. A great day out and rewarding experience!
