Look back to the January sales in New York
New Year Retail Sale in New York
Sales in New York retail stores are always going to be Big. The Big Apple invests heavily in its activities to draw shoppers from the streets in the relatively quiet month of January, and it all starts before the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebrations begin. Huge discounts of up to 70% off are advertised across the stores on Soho, Manhattan and all around the City.
In mid January 2015, Reuters said that U.S. retail sales had recorded their largest decline in 11 months in December as demand fell almost across the board, tempering expectations for a sharp acceleration in consumer spending in the fourth quarter. Economists said sales should bounce back in January. “For January 2015, this seasonal factor will boost sales by the largest factor since 2006,” said Bricklin Dwyer, a senior economist at BNP Paribas in New York. “This combined with the fact that we have seen a massive boost to consumers’ wallets as a result of the rapid decline in gasoline prices, suggests that January could be a big month that reverses much of the December drop,” he said.
